JOB INFORMATION See NOTE(S) below for future wage increases and/or additional compensation opportunities. Arborist positions plan, coordinate, and implement urban forestry, park forestry, or tree maintenance programs; administer and inspect the work of private contractors; make inspections of park property and/or public right of way tree conditions to determine work priorities; provide technical horticultural expertise to subordinates, supervisors, and other City departments; evaluate and rate the work of subordinates and contractors; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
- Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
2% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 7/1/25
- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field.
NOTE:
- Additional qualifying experience may NOT be used to substitute for lack of the required education.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of full-time professional-level street and/or park tree management, park maintenance, or nursery management experience. Qualifying experience MUST include the planning, coordination, or management of at least ONE of the following:
- Botanical or ornamental horticulture.
- Nursery development.
- Park redevelopment and maintenance.
- Pest control management.
- Turf management.
- Water conservation programs.
- Urban and/or park forestry.
NOTES:
- A Master's Degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience developing and conducting staff training.
- Experience working with committees and philanthropic groups.
- Designated Certified Arborist or other qualifying U.S. state certification as an expert in tree care and maintenance.
- ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (ISA TRAQ).
- Possession of a valid Pest Control Advisor License issued from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
