Job Description

Basic Qualifications Bachelors in Slavic and East European studies with a focus in Ukrainian studies. Advanced knowledge of Ukrainian and reading knowledge of another Slavic language. Two years related experience in a publishing environment, preferably handling scholarly monographs or academic journals. Proven project management skills. Strong copy-editing and proofing skills in major manuals of style, and good transliteration skills (knowledge both of IPA and LC romanization for various languages). Additional Qualifications and Skills PhD in an area of Ukrainian studies. Excellent knowledge of Ukrainian, preferably in an editorial context. Proficiency in other Slavic languages (Russian, Polish). Reading knowledge of German or French a plus. Ability to meet deadlines. Additional Information Hybrid work environment. Position Description 1. Solicitation and organization of book reviews for HUS: Identifies recently published books in Ukrainian Studies and adjacent fields; Coordinates with publishers for the receipt of review copies; Identifies qualified book reviewers, and coordinates their deadlines Oversees receipt of book reviews and invoice solicitation for timely submitted reviews, as directed by the publications director. 2. Editing book reviews for HUS: Performs initial reviews of review text received, and contacts authors about any evident shortcomings/additional information; Upon receipt of corrected text, edits the book review text, ensuring accuracy and balance, academic integrity, and HURI stylistic standards; Edits all citations and references per HURI publications guidelines. 3. Editing of scholarly articles to be published in HUS: Performs initial review of approved submitted articles following up with the author about evident shortcomings/needed information; Edits the text of the article, ensuring accuracy and balance, academic integrity, and HURI stylistic standards once requested information and author's addressing of shortcomings from initial reading is returned; Researches additional issues emerging from initial editing process described above, including correction suggestions and queries preparation for author consideration and response; Reviews responding edits and corrections made or accepted by the author, implements all suggestions, carries out further additional research and queries for author, if required; Proofreads the article text, ensuring accuracy and balance, academic integrity, and HURI stylistic standards; Edits all citations and references following HURI publications guidelines; Writes/compiles and edits article abstracts; Assembles and edits contributor bios and photos for publication. 4. Oversight of peer review process of articles for HUS: Working with the HUS editor/director of publications, researches and identifies qualified peer scholars to carry out reviews approved and initially edited articles, contacts identified reviewers, coordinates deadlines and follows-up; Provides peer review guidelines, coordinates article review submissions; responds to questions; Communicates peer review results to authors; Relays to authors subsequent steps per the guidelines provided by the publications director (e.g. article accepted without revisions, accepted with revisions required, article recommended to be revised and resubmitted for subsequent review, or rejected); Updates article status in publications management system (Scholastica or other system used); Solicits invoices for timely submitted peer reviews, per the process defined by the publications director. 5. Other editorial ad hoc tasks: Edits and proofreads article and books texts to be published by HURI; Edits and proofreads scholarly apparatuses such as scholarly notes, references, citations, bibliographies, and indices for articles and books to be published by HURI; Edits and proofreads all HURI Publications materials appearing on the HURI Books, HUS, and Ukranica websites, and other such future websites; Requests permissions to publish images, photographs, and other archival materials; Assists with other editorial tasks pertaining to the operation of the HURI Publications. Carry out administrative tasks pertaining to publication, marketing, and distribution of HUS and other HURI publications, as specified by publications director, including but not limited to: Uploading texts and images to other HURI Publications websites or other digital resources; Participating in events as a representative of the HURI Publications, managing book and journal exhibits, and sales and communications at such events; Assisting in the preparation of outreach, and advertising materials pertaining to HURI Publications, including catalogues, online and print promotion. 6. Performs other HURI publications tasks as defined by the publications director. Job Summary The assistant editor works closely with the editor of the journal, Harvard Ukrainian Studies and is primarily responsible for organizing and editing reviews to be published in the journal as well as editing journal articles. The assistant editor interacts with the publishers of books to be reviewed and with the scholars invited to write the book review articles. For each issue of the journal, the assistant editor ensures that review articles are ready for publication. (The average number of reviews printed in each issue is around 15).
