Job Title: Terminal Port Crane Operator

Gateway Terminal is a leading terminal on the East Coast strategically located in the Port of New Haven, Connecticut, providing turnkey vertically integrated logistics services for dry bulk, liquid bulk, and breakbulk products.

Summary of Position:
The primary function of the Crane Operator is to efficiently and safely load cargo on and off vessels. Secondary duties involve highly skilled work in the operation and general maintenance of a wide variety of heavy equipment used in the maritime industry. You must be qualified to operate all types of cranes, stackers, yard hustlers, forklifts, most farm equipment, heavy industrial construction equipment, and tractor-trailers. This role involves the safe and efficient operation of primarily the heaviest and largest types of equipment used in a full range of maritime operations. You must have mastered a broad spectrum of activities and responsibilities in multiple major areas of vessel operations and terminal operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Safe and efficient operation of gantry cranes, container handlers, forklifts, yard hustlers, and other support equipment.
• Perform corrective, preventative, corrosion control, and minor repairs to all support equipment.
• Complete daily, monthly, and annual safety inspections of equipment, record results in machinery history logs, and assist in corrective measures.
• Qualify in all vessel operations support equipment, terminal support, and warehouse support equipment.
• Participate in the training and administration of training for key support personnel, including flagmen, oilers, yard gang, and new operators.
• Maintain standard proficiency rating as established by management; participate in the proficiency evaluation of other operators.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge of general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light to heavy equipment used in the maritime industry.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge of laws, regulations, safety standards, and procedures applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light to heavy equipment used in the maritime industry.
• Commit to memory the standard hand signals for crane operations and ensure compliance.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements:

• Able to work in conjunction with other team members and supervisors via radio, phone, and/or hand signals.
• Understands and correctly uses the machine's load chart.
• Reacts to changes in conditions that affect the safe operation of the crane.
• Able to pick, carry, swing, and place a load smoothly and safely.
• Experience working in the stevedore industry is desirable but not required.
• Ability to communicate with diverse personalities.
• Ability to work overtime during the week or on weekends.
• Basic knowledge areas include: Safety Procedures; Truck Inspections; Storage and Exchange Points; Counterbalance Effect; Stability Triangle; Center of Gravity; Equipment Terminology; Attachments/Load Centers; Battery Inspection; and Material Handling including loading and de-stacking, unloading, and stacking of counterbalance, traveling ramps, trailers, and parking.

Required Certifications:

• Crane Operator Certification (e.g., NCCCO or equivalent)
• Forklift Certification
• Basic Safety Training (BST)
• Offshore Crane Operator Certification (API RP 2D)
• Other Relevant Certifications (e.g., Rigging, Lifting Operations)

• Conduct regular safety checks and inspections of equipment before use.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
• Follow proper lifting techniques and use lifting aids when necessary to prevent injuries.
• Report any unsafe conditions or incidents immediately to the supervisor.
• Participate in safety training sessions and drills to stay updated on best practices and emergency procedures.
• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations.
• Promote a safety-conscious culture among team members and encourage adherence to safety standards.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this position, you will be required to stand, walk, use your hands to handle or feel objects and reach with your hands and arms. The work environment involves hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, chemicals, heavy equipment, and extreme heights. You will be exposed to inclement weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting, and sound. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
