Position / Title: Custodial Category D - Secondary Floater Custodian Bargaining Unit: ESSO Department/Location: Plant Operations Work Days: 261 Reports To: Coordinator of Custodial JD Revision Date: 10/22/2025 Supervises: N/A Function / Position Summary This position provides flexible custodial support primarily to middle and high schools, and elementary schools, as needed throughout the district. This position assists with maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and basic maintenance of school facilities and grounds. The floater custodian also serves as a substitute for various custodial positions during absences, assuming responsibility for coordinating custodial operations and addressing daily facility needs. This role ensures consistent coverage and high standards of building care across secondary schools, providing staff and students with a safe, clean, and comfortable learning environment.
Job Duties / Responsibilities - Assume role of Campus Lead and/or Assistant when needed to ensure appropriate building coverage.
- Assist with maintaining general building mechanical systems and conduct required preventative and repair maintenance. Escalate major maintenance problems to Plant Operations.
- Perform daily custodial duties, including, but not limited to, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, trash removal, restocking supplies, and restroom sanitation.
- Complete semi-annual and annual deep cleaning and project duties, including, but not limited to, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, restroom maintenance, and graffiti removal.
- Support daily and special event setups, including, but not limited to, furniture arrangement, cafeteria breakfast and lunch preparation/cleanup and equipment staging.
- Complete daily/weekly/monthly inspections, including, but not limited to, building systems, mobile classrooms, fire and security alarms, playgrounds, roofs, generators and boilers. Complete necessary paperwork.
- Perform general grounds upkeep duties, including snow/ice removal, salting, and landscape maintenance, including trash/debris pick up.
- Maintain "on-call" status to respond to emergency and/or after-hour events such as fire alarms, break-ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage.
- Adhere to security protocols for locking and unlocking doors. Actively monitor and report any security concerns, and immediately address urgent safety issues (e.g., spills, broken glass). Regularly perform basic safety checks during your shifts.
- Maintain adequate inventory and request custodial supplies and parts as needed.
- Support receiving, logging, inspecting and distributing building mail and deliveries. Prepare outgoing shipments as needed.
- Use approved communication platforms and the district's work order system to promptly receive, initiate, track, complete, and close work orders and routinely monitor email and notifications for timely responses.
- Work independently or collaboratively with departmental, district, and/or contractor personnel to ensure the efficient operation and upkeep of all facilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education - High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
- Valid Illinois Driver's License required.
Experience / Knowledge - Three (3) years' experience in custodial related duties.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
- Basic computer knowledge to record and maintain written records.
- Knowledge of computer-assisted HVAC systems.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, material, and equipment used in building care and cleaning.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical and building equipment, including, but not limited to, temperature controls, boilers, air conditioning, and air handling equipment.
- Experience with all types of electric service and the ability to troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs.
- Experience in handling various cleaning chemicals used in the field.
Physical Demands - Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights, up to 40 ft.
- Ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs. with proper technique.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.
Terms of Employment - This is a 12-month position. Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education Board of Education.
- Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary. Travel between buildings may be required.
- Must pass a written skills test related to building mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical, and safety procedures to qualify for an interview.
- A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test.
