POSITION OVERVIEW
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall direction, leadership, and administration of the clinical laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintain the clinical laboratory in a manner that is safe and compliant with OSHA standards and applicable local regulations.
  2. Ensure that the environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees and patients are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
  3. Assist Principal Investigators, Site Director, and Clinical Research Coordinators with logistics and planning of all study procedures.
  4. Initiates quality-control measures and monitors work quality for compliance with laboratory standards.
  5. Evaluate existing systems and processes and develop corrective action plans for service/quality trends identified. Initiates changes and monitors improvement.
  6. Purchases supplies for the laboratory. Recommends procurement of new laboratory equipment and monitors maintenance/repair needs of existing equipment.
  7. Monitor specimen storage to ensure sample integrity.
  8. Record and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently.
  9. Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the laboratory process.
  10. Perform clinical tasks including, but not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, ECG, phlebotomy, specimen packing and shipping.
  11. Participate in creating and maintaining staffing plans for the laboratory team, including making recommendations for hiring additional staff, when needed.
  12. Assist in identifying and securing, through hiring and interview processes, candidates for open roles in the laboratory department.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

  8. Ability to use lab equipment with accuracy, precision, and efficiency.
  9. Proficiency with a mechanical pipettor.
  10. Familiarity with how to safely transport hazardous materials in accordance with IATA training and Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).

QUALIFICATIONS
Education

  1. Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field preferred; RN and/or LPN preferred.
  2. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certificate preferred.
  3. International Air Transport Association (IATA) certificate preferred.
  4. OSHA training certificate preferred.

Experience

  1. Four to six years of experience in a laboratory environment with similar functions.
  2. Minimum of 2 years management experience required.
  3. Phlebotomy experience a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
