Adecco Medical & Lifesciences is currently looking to hire a skilled Medical Interpreter for Newark ,NJ location .
Role: Medical Interpreter
Shift: 1st (M-F), 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
Pay: 40.20/hr
Summary:
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Medical Interpreter facilitates communication between patients, staff, and families who speak different languages or use sign language. The role involves translating medical and other information while adhering to hospital policies, procedures, and patient confidentiality regulations. The position may require trilingual interpretation services, including Spanish or Portuguese and American Sign Language (ASL).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Customer Service
Language Interpretation: Serve as a medical interpreter for patients and their families with limited English proficiency, and for those who are deaf or hearing impaired, translating spoken language into sign language.
Trilingual Interpretation: Facilitate communication among English speakers, Spanish or Portuguese speakers, and ASL users, maintaining the fundamental meaning of the message in all three languages.
Cultural and Linguistic Resource: Provide cultural and linguistic support to both patients and providers to ensure successful communication outcomes.
Clarification and Support: Clearly explain instructions and follow-up steps; remain calm and impartial in stressful situations, and diffuse tensions effectively.
Hospital System Knowledge: Understand and explain hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients.
Equipment and Resource Management: Ensure the availability of language services equipment such as dual-handset phones and other assistive devices.
Collaboration: Work with clinical and non-clinical staff to ensure timely availability of appropriate communication resources for effective interaction.
Job Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a science, language, or human services area.
Language Skills: Fluency in English and ASL is required. ASL fluency must be certified by at least one of the following: The National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at or above level 4; or be eligible to sit for the exam.
Additional Languages: Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred.
Medical Interpretation Experience: Specific training or experience in medical interpretation required. The Medical Interpreter must be “qualified” and possess at least 40 hours of interpreter training. Certification through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters is required or must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
Cultural Competence: Understanding of diverse cultural/socio-economic backgrounds, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well under pressure.
