Job Description

Under supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) or the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), provides resident care in accordance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. The Medication Aide-Certified (MA-C)/STNA is responsible for caring for residents both physically and emotionally to enhance quality of life, including ADL and rehabilitation activities. Essential functions include participating in nursing reports, documenting medications and treatments accurately and timely in EMR, maintaining control of drugs in medicine cart (excluding locked scheduled drugs), assisting residents at mealtimes and with personal care such as bathing, grooming, hygiene, and placement of adaptive equipment. Explains procedures to residents, assists with bowel and bladder functions, empties urinary drainage bags, assists with lifting, positioning, and transporting residents, performs restorative and rehabilitative procedures, ensures call lights are answered promptly, reports changes in residents' condition, maintains cleanliness of resident units and supplies, assists with appointments and social programs, provides post-mortem care, performs special nursing care duties, assists with feeding and hydration, records all entries on flow sheets and other documents, participates in care conferences, maintains confidentiality, uses supplies properly, reports equipment defects, handles unusual occurrences calmly, maintains effective communication with residents and families, follows safety and security guidelines especially in Dementia Care Unit, participates in educational and training activities, and performs other duties as assigned. The MA-C will not perform medication dosage conversions, give medications via nasogastric/gastrostomy/jejunostomy routes, regulate IV fluids or pumps, administer injections including insulin, handle scheduled II controlled substances, give first dose of new medications, call physicians regarding client status or medication needs, accept verbal or telephone orders, administer oxygen, PRN narcotics, or inhalants requiring calculations. Competencies required include accountability, accuracy, oral and written communication, customer orientation, detail orientation, empathy, honesty/integrity, interpersonal skills, and patience. Education preferred is High School Graduate or GED. No prior experience necessary. Must be proficient with computer and basic office equipment. Certifications required include successful completion of state-approved Nursing Assistant program and Ohio Board of Nursing approved MA-C training, with maintenance of mandatory certifications. Other requirements include ability to assist patients during therapy, special dementia care training, effective communication skills, ability to use computer for charting, operation of equipment like Sit to Stand, Hoyer Lift, Gait belts, tub chairs, dependability, compassion, ability to work with elderly residents and healthcare staff, participation in continuing education, and adherence to employee handbook terms.
