Salary range:
Total Negotiated Salary (TNS) calculation depending on specialty can range from $320,000-$360,000. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. This position includes/ may include membership in the health sciences compensation plan, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

Position description

We are seeking to hire a faculty member for the position of Psycho-Oncologist within the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. The appointment will be made at the rank of Health Sciences Assistant, Associate, or Full Clinical Professor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Position Overview:

Under the general direction of the UCI Health Chief Executive Officer; the Vice Dean, Faculty & Clinical Affairs, School of Medicine, Chair of Psychiatry & Human Behavior, and the Director of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, through their appropriate designees; the position in Psycho-Oncology will provide Psychiatric services within the Supportive Oncology Program and within the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. The faculty member is expected to establish and sustain a clinical and scholarly program focused on providing psychiatric care for cancer patients.

The Supportive Oncology Program is functionally a coordination of services provided by no less than 12 existing supportive and/or clinical programs/ units/ Divisions/ Departments/ Institutes. These include but are not limited to: Pain Management Program, Nutritional/Dietician support; Case Management and Financial Counseling; Social Work; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Neurology; Sports Medicine and osteopathic manipulation; Geriatrics; Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery; Physical Therapy; Psychiatry & Human Behavior; Occupational Therapy; Medical Genetics and Genetic Counselors; Spiritual Care/Chaplaincy; Palliative Care Program; and Susan Samueli Institute for Integrative Medicine.

Key Responsibilities:

1. In collaboration with the entire Supportive Oncology Program, lead the Psycho-Oncology Program, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care addressing the psychological and mental health impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
2. Coordinate psychiatric and mental health care across multiple disciplines to enhance patient care and experience, over the course of their cancer trajectory
3. Foster cross disciplinary communication and coordination of care.
4. Establish and maintain clinical standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with evidence-based practices.
5. Foster and encourage clinical trial development by the Psycho-Oncology Program within the Supportive Oncology Program.
6. Supervise LCSWs and Psychologists involved in the Supportive Oncology Program.
7. Coordinate and lead cancer patient support groups in conjunction with other members of the Psycho-Oncology Team
8. In conjunction with Director of the Supportive Oncology Program and the EPIC team, assure inclusion of patient reported outcomes, and psychosocial data (both demographic and surveys) in the EMR in an easily retrievable manner.
9. Develop educational opportunities and assist with change management and cultural change for UCI Health providers and clinical staff for early involvement of Psycho-Oncology and Supportive Oncology.
10. Participate in Advancement activities to support, sustain, and grow the Supportive Oncology Program
11. Participate in the clinical and educational programs in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UC Irvine, including on call activities.
12. Serve the mental health and cancer care needs of the diverse patient population in Orange County

Basic Qualifications:

1. MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school with eligibility for board certification in Psychiatry.

Additional Qualifications:

1. Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of practice.
2. Able to meet all requirements for full credentialing by UCI Health
3. Experience or Training in Psycho-Oncology, i.e. providing psychiatric care to cancer patients throughout their course.
4. Experience with telehealth &/or other innovative care delivery models.
5. Ability to maintain an accurate, clear, and up to date medical record of all encounters
6. Ability to work and coordinate with PhD psychologists and LCSWs.
7. Commitment to and track record of scholarly activity inclusive of clinical/translational research.
8. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively work with diverse teams and stakeholders.
9. Knowledge of Academic Medical Centers, Matrix organizations, NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, and the local healthcare landscape.
10. Proficiency in data analytics, interpretation, and presentation to drive informed decision-making and performance improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Subspecialty training and Board Eligibility in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry
2. Knowledge of Academic Medical Centers, Matrix organizations, NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, and the local healthcare landscape.
3. Leadership experience in an academic unit
4. Leadership experience in an NCI-designated Cancer Center
5. Experience providing care to patients enrolled in clinical trials, including serving as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator.
