Overview

Wildlife Biologist 3 in Dillingham, AK. Open to Alaska Residents. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 3 located in Dillingham.

What you will be doing

This position is responsible for the management of all terrestrial wildlife in the northern Bristol Bay area (Game Management Unit 17), covering approximately 20,000 square miles. Responsibilities include oversight of the Mulchatna caribou herd (including intensive management efforts), administration of hunting and trapping seasons, responding to nuisance wildlife reports and public safety situations, providing technical expertise and recommendations on wildlife populations, their ecology, and long-term conservation and enhancement. The incumbent is assisted by a shared Wildlife Biologist 2 based in Dillingham.

Key duties include:

  • Monitor and evaluate wildlife populations (caribou, moose, brown bear, black bear, furbearers)
  • Make recommendations regarding hunting and trapping regulations
  • Coordinate with other state and government agencies
  • Oversee the day-to-day function of a remote area office
  • Address public safety concerns and nuisance wildlife issues (moose, bear)
  • Write technical reports and operational plans
  • Provide habitat and population management guidance for the region
  • Collaborate with wildlife biologists and managers across the state on management challenges
  • Provide information to the public, media, scientific conferences and advisory committees
  • Travel within the management area and state for duties
  • May require use of firearms and flying in small aircraft in mountainous terrain
Who we are looking for

We are seeking an energetic professional with experience in:

  • Designing, planning, and implementing wildlife management programs for large mammal populations
  • Monitoring and evaluating large mammal populations, field work, population modeling, and sustainable harvest goals
  • Capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of large mammal species
  • Collecting data via aerial and ground surveys and preparing data summaries and technical reports
  • Answering public/stakeholder inquiries on complex issues or regulations (e.g., trapping/hunting regulations, permits, public access, etc.)
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology or related fields and one year of professional biologist experience. The required experience may be met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere.

A valid driver's license is required. This position may involve firearms/ammunition. The candidate may hold or have access to firearms. Some positions may require training in specialized areas.
