A Youth Mediator is primarily responsible for facilitating dialogue and mediation between individuals impacted by harm, including victims, offenders, and their support systems. By utilizing restorative justice practices within various settings like schools, a youth mediator promotes accountability, repairs relationships, and restores community harmony. 

All new employees undergo a 90-day probationary period. Background checks and fingerprinting are also necessary for employment in schools. 

Responsibilities include

Implementing Restorative Practices:

Implement all components of the N.I.C.E. program, Including Social-Emotional Learning, Interventions ( conflict resolution), and restorative practices during and after school sessions. Use restorative practices to address student conflicts, bullying, and disciplinary issues. 

 

Mediation and Peer Mediation:

A mediator, including a peer mediator, is primarily responsible for facilitating communication between conflicting parties, helping them understand each other's perspectives, and guiding them toward a mutually agreeable solution by remaining neutral and not imposing decisions while ensuring confidentiality throughout the process.

 

Facilitation of Restorative Circles:
Leading structured dialogues in group settings where individuals affected by harm can share their experiences, understand the impact of their actions, and work collaboratively towards solutions. 

Student Advocacy:
Providing resources and emotional support to victims of harm, ensuring their voices are heard, and needs are addressed throughout the therapeutic process. 

Community Engagement:
Collaborating with community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders to build awareness and support for restorative justice practices.

Training and Education:
Delivering workshops and training sessions to various groups, including school staff, district employees, school security guards, community members, and other professionals on restorative justice principles and techniques. 

Documentation and Reporting:
Maintaining detailed records of restorative justice sessions, including participant information, discussions, agreements reached, and progress updates. 

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual Spanish or Haitian Creole

  • Restorative Justice, Education/School Counseling/Mental Health or related field

  • Social and Emotional Learning

  • Case Management

To help students increase accessibility to tools promoting skill acquisition for coping, self-regulating, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Monitors and models evidence/research-based behavior intervention strategies.
